Every species of trees have their own unique growth rates and patterns. That being said, you wouldn't prune a Red Maple the same way you would prune a Pin Oak. The two are so different in the way they grow and require specific trimming procedures.
A Red Maple generally needs a reduction also to have its inner branches thinned out. This is important for the tree to gain airflow travel and sunlight, also retaining its structural integrity. While the Oak will call for a dead wooding process. Removing all of the dead branches that Oak trees typically acquire.
